Cow 82 STANDING TALL

6x6 inch
oil on gessobord
SOLD

Sometimes I find it a little challenging when my subject is mostly one colour except for the shadows and highlights, I tend to add a little extra colour to spice things up a bit, like the bright orange in the hair, the soft pink around the eyes...and of course my old standby chartreuse.

Cow 81 HEAD HONCHO

6x6 inches
oil on gessobord
SOLD

This is another painting I started with a white canvas...no underpainting, I am really enjoying the process, it's like someone turned a bright light on while you were painting...change is always good to shake things up a little.

Cow 80 BABY MAMA

6 x 6 inch
oil on gessobord
SOLD

I started this painting on a white canvas...no under paint, and sketched it with indian yellow.  I like that it is really crisp, the cow stands out so much against the background.

Cow 79 INNOCENCE

6 x 6 inches
oil on gessobord
SOLD

There is something wonderful about anything as soft and wispy as a baby calf, and so very innocent. I used a very limited palette and worked on enhancing the soft curves and leaving the brushwork very loose.

Cow 78 BFF

These two cows were great to paint, I used a limited palette and kept things very simple.

I like that this cow fills the canvas, sometimes it seems more effective.  Lots of oranges and golds with hints of pink...enjoyed painting him.

Cow 76 THE BELL BOY

6 x 6 inches
oil on gessobord
SOLD
I haven't painted many pure white cows, it can be a challenge sometimes because of my colour addiction.  That being said I really enjoyed just trying to keep the colours and shadows soft though I did get to add a little pop with the landscape.

Today I was in my studio in town, whenever I am not sure what to paint I go to the cow...never fails to get the creative juices flowing.

Cow 74 THREE'S A CROWD

6 x 6 inch
oil on gessobord
SOLD

I couldn't seem to get this painting right, I worked on it for two days and couldn't figure out what I didn't like about it.  I finally wiped the face and started from scratch giving it more colour and definition to differentiate from the cows in the forefront.  I am really happy with the outcome.

GENTLE SOUL

6 x 6 inch
oil on gessobord
SOLD

I saw this beauty at my favourite bakery, she was sitting calmly while her owner was busy with other things. I loved how the light was shining against her.  This piece is very loosely painted, I love the messiness of her coat.

CHOICES

I am becoming hooked on painting still life.  I love that you can pick a favourite object and use it as a subject, I am a fan of bright coloured pottery and glass ware so I have a great assortment to choose from.

CARROTS AND TOMATOES

6 x 6 inch

TOMATO BEAUTIES

6 x 6 inch
oil on gessobord
SOLD

We were at the farmers market and there was a booth with the most amazing tomatoes...the colours were spectacular. At that moment I decided I would paint a fruit/vegetable still life which I have never done before. It took me much longer than usual to paint but I love the outcome.  I probably spent as much time studying the tomatoes as I did painting them.

Cow 73 TANK

6 x 6 inch
oil on gessobord
SOLD

All of my yellows, reds and oranges got a workout today.  I did the sketching with a dark mauve, I like how the warms just pop against it. I used two brushes throughout this painting and a little paper towel to move the paint around in spots...lots of play.

Cow 72 KING OF EVERYTHING6

6 x 6 inch
oil on gessobord
$50.00

I started using a couple of transparent paints again, they are really nice to use for underpainting and then to mix with your other colours. I am trying not to make my darks to dark, I sometimes tend to do that. I am happy with this painting, I love the expression of the cow.

Loved painting these pigs, used to a very limited palette to achieve the look I wanted...loose strokes and I left the detail right until the very end.

CODY

8 x 6 inch
oil on gessobord
SOLD

This is a commission I did for a couple of their beloved dog who I am sure they miss everyday.

OVERLOOKING SALTSPRING

10 x 10 inch
oil on 3/4 inch wrapped canvas
SOLD
Yesterday I took the day off from painting and watched a video of Daniel J Keys, one of my very favourite artists. I tried incorporating some tips I have learned, I have watched the video several times and always pick up something new.  I took this photo a few months ago, it was quite a grey day but still so beautiful, I took the liberty of adding  more colour than was actually present.  I really enjoyed working on a large(for me) canvas as my usual size is 6 x 6 inch.
