Old yellow dog in Annecy

Every Wednesday I spend the day at The old school house art gallery in Qualicum Beach.  I packed up all my painting supplies, iPod, iPad  Matcha tea and away I went.  My full intention was to create 2 paintings and at the end of the day be completely satisfied and head home with paintings in hand to add to Daily paint works.  Well that didn't happen, painting # 1 which was a raccoon I spent about 45 minutes on and then wiped,  thought to myself I will pick something else to work on.  Found a lovely picture of a husky, started the painting worked on it for about the same amount of time…hated it…wiped it.  What to do, what to do? I headed home to grab a bite to eat and decided to bring my sketchbook back with me.  This is a sketch of a photo that my daughter took in Annecy, France.  The dog was at the market surrounded by people and not really looking like he wanted to be there.  Moral of the story.  If your paintings aren't working pull out your sketch book.

Puppy love

6 x 6
oil on board

I really tried at the beginning of this painting not to rush, trying to get the correct shape and position.  I added the darks to give definition and slowly began to introduce the colour and set the painting up.  I am pleased with the outcome.

Man's best friend

8 x 6
oil on board

This is my dog Charlie, if you were deciding on a personality for a dog his would be it.  He loves us(his family) but he also loves everyone else. His routine is very important to him , eat, run, sleep and then eat again. Everyday is a new beginning for him, maybe it is because he is a rescue dog and had been given back 3 times to the humane society.  With patience and training he has become the most wonderful companion.

6 x 8
oil on board

I started another painting today, it was a dog amongst people walking, I ended up wiping it after a couple of attempts…sometimes you just have to walk away.  I already had my palette so I decided to paint daffodils since it was such a beautiful day here.

Oreo 8 x 8

8 x 8
oil on wrapped canvas

Next month there is an 8 x 8 exhibit at The old school house gallery where I live. You can paint anything you want as long as the piece measures 8 x 8. I decided to paint Oreo again. Every year I purchase the Blue dog day timer with art by George Rodrigue, he paints the same dog over and over changing things about each painting…never gets boring. i look through every page to see what the next dog painting will be.
